    "BaseCamp" is simplly a poorly designed product. Garmin is stuck in the 90s and soon will be struggling to survive once IOS 18.0 is out.

    Thanks, Tim, for another very informative video. About 6 months ago now, I bought my myself a Zumo XT2 for my Honda CB500X adventure bike. Main reason for purchasing the ZUMO XT2 is because around my neck of the woods, here in Nothern NSW Australia, is that the mobile network has a ton of "blackspots" and Google Maps quickly become very challenging or completely useless on a smart phone. Learning to use BaseCamp successfully is almost a must if you own a Garmin Zumo GPS Satnav device. I have only watched about half a dozen of your vids so far, but they look to be very informative. Thank You! (I have Subscribed)

    Hello, Thank you for your videos Personally, I am not at all satisfied with my XT2 compared to my old ZUMO 660. Garmin software is unnecessarily complex to use and inconsistent (Explore, Tread, ...). None of them allows you to create a route on a PC and send it easily to the GPS. The positive points of the device are its large screen and its visibility in all circumstances as you pointed out. On the other hand, in terms of guidance, regardless of the application used to create your route in .gpx format, when imported into the XT2, it will modify your route and sometimes in a significant way even if it will always lead you to your destination. The second negative point is, when he has to recalculate a road, for example because of roadworks and a closed road, he will for a very long time, try to put you back where you left the planned route instead of creating an alternative route for you. In these recalculation cases, it also deletes the shaping points that you had placed for the rest of your route. The best thing to do is to stop the guidance and then resume it. I regret having broken my piggy bank for this device by succumbing to Garmin's marketing.

    Hello Tim, I am enjoying your tutourials and am getting more comfortable with it every day thanks to these tutourials. 1 question, and I may have missed it in the videos. I have a multiday trip that I am planning and 1/2 way thru one of the days I want to cross a river using a ferry. Basecamp does not recognize crossing the river and keeps sending me back down the river to cross on a bridge way down river. I have tried to split the route but it keeps doing the same thing. Can I start a new route on the same day? Or what is best to achieve a solution? Also departing the accom on this day the route goes in a direct line to the final destination, I click and drag to the roads I want to use, so no problem there......

    I'm really having major struggles with all of this..(stick with me here) I did a map update, then saw the section of this tutorial to say I should have downloaded the map to both GPS and computer, however when I went into Express and tried to do what your screen showed, all I see is "Maps are up to date" (or similar), with no option to send the newly update maps to my PC? Here's the clincher - I am doing a 5 week trip over about 10000km in about 3 weeks time, am working 70 hours per week in the leadup to going away, and I still have major bike prep to undertake. I think I'm gonna struggle getting my head around Basecamp (I'm hopeless at technology in general). It seems to be something that I would need hours and hours (like 20+) to even start to get this working and create my routes. Then what happens if I want to change course along the way? And when i start my ride, I won't have a computer with me at any stage, so anything I want to create on the fly just won't happen? My life has become immeasurably harder since I got my Zumo XT.. Rant over!!

    Nice and clear explanations on the Basecamp program. Adding waypoints after each major intersection is a good trick, but causes issues when reversing a route. You just moved them to the other part of a devided route, but you should also move them to the other side of the intersection to avoid the double messages of "you arrived ..." and "turn ......". The inconvenience of these added waypoint is not a big issue for me as I don't like to drive the same route on my return drive.

    • @EZMotoTim
      @EZMotoTim 2 місяці тому

      Yep, If you duplicate a route for the return, you have to move the waypoints appropriately.

    Tim, I found this video, goes along with my prior question.....too bad that shaping points still have to be added to a route to force designed routing. It would have been amazing that a created route would "stick" as drawn. I have practiced locally and my DriveSmart 76 seems to "stick" without adding the additional shaping points.

    • @EZMotoTim
      @EZMotoTim 2 місяці тому

      Yep. Remember, there are 2 separate compute engines - one on your computer in BaseCamp™ and one in your GPS. They may not calculate the route identically. The compute engines are dumb. They rely on us and shaping points to make them smarter.

  • @lkazanov
    @lkazanov 4 місяці тому

    Tim, your videos are incredibly helpful. A question for you. I think in this video or other one, you mentioned adding shaping points to a route after a turn to force the GPS to follow the drawn route. Does this defeat the purpose a bit? I thought that the once a custom route is created the GPS must follow the route as created (drawn)? Does Garmin's algorithm take over regardless?

    • @EZMotoTim
      @EZMotoTim 2 місяці тому

      Yes. Remember, there are 2 separate compute engines - one on your computer in BaseCamp™ and one in your GPS. They may not calculate the route identically. The compute engines are dumb. They rely on us and shaping points to make them smarter.

    Great videos Tim well done and thanks for sharing. One item though I didn't seem to find in your videos and this is about sending POI's to Garmin GPS' along with the route. When you are on your motobike navigating a route on your Garmin GPS, you'd like the POI's to display on screen. Despite many tutorials I've seen, I'm not able to find a way of getting the POI's embedded in the GPS' route and display on screen. Can you show how is this done? Many thanks. Pedro

    • @EZMotoTim
      @EZMotoTim 2 місяці тому

      I believe the answer is to make sure the shaping/waypoints are marked to alert in the Route Details screen in BaseCamp™.

  • @centraloregonsusie

    Hi - do you put the way points on the ride just after a turn to keep the route going on the road you want it to go on?

    • @EZMotoTim
      @EZMotoTim 2 місяці тому

      The primary reason for putting the waypoints after the turn is to separate the audible instructions from overlapping. You want the instruction to turn to come first and the instruction informing you that you are at your waypoint to come afterward.

    QUESTION: I've used multiple different apps, to create routes, I have then been placing them into a GPX file and transferring it to "basecamp." After I've done this I transfer it to my Garmin Zumo 595 that I have connected. However, I often find that Zumo will follow a different route, not created with REVER or another app. Why does this happen? If I create a route in Base Camp will it do the same thing or follow the route that I want it to follow?

    • @EZMotoTim
      @EZMotoTim 2 місяці тому

      Remember, there are 2 different compute engines calculating the route. One on your computer in BaseCamp™ and one in your GPS. The often compute the route differently. The route will go where you want it to go if you put in more shaping points.

      @@EZMotoTim Thanks for the info. I'll give it a try. However, with that said I wish that Garmin would come out with a more user friendly program, I don't mind spending money for a good program. I really do like google maps, the information that it provides is incredible, but not horrible for creating a custom route. Once again, thanks for your input and your videos.

    • @EZMotoTim
      @EZMotoTim 2 місяці тому

      @@williamkerner Garmin has shown us the direction they are headed and it doesn't include any new desktop app. Garmin has developed the on-line infrastructure for tools going forward. Garmin Explore (online) is the tool for creating tracks and routes. I created a route in Explore and downloaded to analyze the contents. It just contained waypoints. So the new scheme is to feed a GPS waypoints and let it calculate the route. It's a very simplistic scheme and not at all what motorcyclists want. Hang on to BaseCamp™ for as long as it works.
